Il Poggetto is a small family-run farm located in Panicale, a small village overlooking Lake Trasimeno. Life at the farm passes in harmony and with respect for nature.
Every year, our vegetable garden gives us a small crop of the highly prized Saffron, which has been famous in Umbria dating back to the 13th century. Once used for coloring fabrics, it is now used to flavor dishes from the Umbrian culinary tradition.
Our resident hens and turtles liven up our garden.
While olive oil is the product that characterizes our farm, the vineyard allows us to produce an excellent IGT red wine.
Thucydides wrote in the fifth century "The people of the Mediterranean began to emerge from barbarism when they learned to cultivate olive trees and vines".
The general trend in Umbria over the past three decades is to produce high quality extra virgin olive oils. Umbria accounts for approximately 2-3% of the entire Italian production. While this volume may seem small, it is highly acclaimed. Unlike other oils, such as canola or sunflower, extra virgin olive oil is obtained solely from pressed olives. It is the only oil that comes from a fresh fruit!
5 reasons to use Extra Virgin Olive Oil every day:
1. Contains polyphenols, antioxidants that slow down cell aging
2. Helps produce good cholesterol (HDL)
3. It is the only 100% digestible oil, it supports digestive activity and kidney function
4. It is a natural anti-inflammatory
5. When used daily, it has been linked to a lower risk of cancer
Our extra virgin olive oil is produced exclusively from our olives, which are sustainably grown and harvested from our onsite orchard of trees that range from 50 to hundreds of years old. The quality of the finished product is guaranteed at every stage of production, thanks to the integration of cutting edge industry innovations. The olive harvest takes place between October and November depending on the ripening of the fruit.
The olives are harvested early to ensure the highest product quality, thanks to systems that intercept the olives without allowing them to touch the ground.
The milling takes place within 24 hours from harvesting, strictly cold and only by mechanical means, to obtain a tasty oil with low levels of acidity and high polyphenol content .
